Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently acquired social media giants Twitter for a whopping $44 Billion on 25 April 2022. While he might be the world’s richest man, he aims even higher with this new takeover by promising a new era of “free speech” for everyone.
Twitter With “Free Speech” – A Necessity Or An Afterthought?
Twitter is used by more than 200 million people daily. Throughout its 16-year runtime, it has been promoted as a platform where people can express themselves without restrictions.
However, with the increasing number of political groups and personalities, global conglomerates, and spambots, Twitter has been subjected to criticism lately. Twitter has been accused of promoting posts by politicians and political parties, along with business advertisements and their agendas over regular users’ posts.
This soon led to many posts and accounts getting banned left and right for promoting the wrong political viewpoint or the supposedly “wrong” ideals that Twitter does not follow. This came into the spotlight when ex-US President Donald Trump’s Twitter account was banned during the 2021 US presidential elections to support Joe Biden’s campaign.
Elon Musk – Twitter’s New Shepherd?
After the announcement of Twitter’s takeover on Monday, Elon Musk tweeted that he would promote the concept of free speech for everyone with almost no moderation. He says that too much moderation of posts and content on Twitter has tarnished its reputation as a platform where everyone can voice their opinions without any restrictions.
“Over the years, it has become a boiling pot for hate speech and misleading posts because of its constantly changing algorithm,” – said Musk. He also proclaimed to unlock the “true potential” of Twitter by introducing new features that can tackle harmful content in a much more justifiable way. “I would want Twitter to be free so that even my enemies and haters are free to post against me,” said Musk.
Whether this new takeover will prove to be a gamechanger for the platform remains to be seen. Only time and Musk can tell right now.
