Restoring Trust In Media: The Critical Need For Human Verification On Social Media


As the world becomes more interconnected, the role of media in shaping public opinion has never been more significant.

Recent findings by Pew Research revealed an alarming trend: trust in traditional media is at an all-time low, particularly among younger generations. These digital-native individuals increasingly turn to social platforms for news, placing more trust in these digital forums than in conventional media.

A crucial distinction between these two forms of media is their accountability standards. Traditional media is bound by human oversight and journalistic ethics, while social media is often swayed by manipulative bots. In 2022, Security Magazine reported on findings by Imperva that bots contributed to almost half (47.4%) of all internet traffic, a 5.1% increase over the previous year. 

And every social media platform is under siege—malicious bots regularly assault Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, and any other you can think of.  In 2022, a study released by Washington University in St Louis estimated that bots account for 25–68% of Twitter (now X) users, for example. 

More alarming, over half of nefarious bots are considered to be sophisticated, according to Security Magazine.  This means their detection and removal is increasingly becoming more complex and difficult.

As a result, bots have thrown our public discourse into a crisis of legitimacy. It’s time to do what social platforms have long resisted: introduce human verification for social media users. In a critical election year, there is no time like the present to attack automated misinformation generated by bots.

Bots and the crisis of confidence 

Bots, automated programs that mimic human online behavior, exert a substantial impact on the digital ecosystem. Their role in influencing social and political narratives, often overshadowed by their stealthy operations, carries profound implications.

These bots are not only present during critical global events, such as political upheavals and public health crises. However, they also infiltrate commercial domains, manipulating consumer behavior and skewing product popularity. 

This insidious behavior raises questions about the authenticity of online engagements and the integrity of shared information. It degrades trust in the sources and creates a world in which misinformation can spread faster than the truth.

Social media platforms have been reluctant to implement human verification systems, primarily due to economic reasons. The presence of bots inflates user engagement metrics, making these platforms more appealing to advertisers and, thus, more profitable. However, this financial benefit comes at a steep social cost: erosion of media trust and rampant spread of misinformation. 

The existing technology for human verification, which could significantly reduce the influence of bots, remains underutilized. This inaction highlights a conflict between commercial interests and the pressing need to preserve the integrity of public discourse.

Implementing Human Verification 

The application of human verification techniques presents a feasible solution to this challenge. Advanced geolocation, age verification, and behavioral analytics, already successfully employed in commercial applications, can be adapted for social media platforms.

These methods effectively differentiate genuine users from automated entities, paving the way for more authentic online interactions. The critical task is integrating these technologies into social platforms while maintaining user privacy and respecting online anonymity.

Consider the realm of online banking, where stringent security measures are routinely employed to authenticate users and safeguard financial transactions. Banking platforms utilize multi-factor authentication, analyzing device fingerprints, IP addresses, and transaction patterns to ensure the legitimacy of account holders. These methods scrutinize various aspects of user behavior and technical attributes, confirming the user’s identity without compromising their privacy.

Similar techniques can be adapted to authenticate social media users and weed out bots. Much like online banking, social platforms could implement verification systems that analyze IP addresses, device information, and behavioral patterns to distinguish humans from bots. These measures, which respect anonymity, aim to confirm humans behind digital interactions, countering the influence of bots and preserving the integrity of online discussions.

Rudimentary protocols like these can tell you whether a user trying to log in is indeed located in New Jersey or is attempting to log in from somewhere in Russia or China. Simple approaches like these – already in use, just in different contexts – would go a long way in stemming the tide of bot-prone social media platforms that are not currently utilizing such methodologies to verify their users.

Human verification is not identity verification. Verifying human online behavior does not aim to eliminate online anonymity or uncover the identities of social media users. Instead, it ensures that participants in the digital discourse are in fact human, not bots programmed to manipulate and distort. 

By verifying human interactions, platforms can significantly curtail the influence of bot-driven propaganda and misinformation that undermine confidence in online forums. This measure preserves online privacy and anonymity while ensuring the authenticity of interactions and discussions on social media platforms.

The Time Is Now 

As the primary sources of news and information for many people, social media platforms bear a significant societal responsibility. They must acknowledge the threat posed by bots and take proactive steps to mitigate their influence.

By incorporating human verification systems, these platforms can combat the spread of misinformation and work towards rebuilding public trust. This action is not just a technical necessity but a moral imperative to ensure a well-informed and discerning public.

The introduction of human verification on social media platforms is a critical step in safeguarding our public discourse from manipulation and distortion. While the technology and methodologies for implementation are readily available, the challenge lies in the collective will to prioritize this important pursuit. Platforms, regulators, and users must collaborate to establish a media landscape that values truth and authenticity over profit.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of the digital age,  human verification on social media is not just a beneficial move—it’s essential. We can rebuild the credibility of our digital media landscape.  We must foster a trustworthy environment for public discourse —especially during news cycles around pivotal world events and major elections. The time for action is absolutely right now.
