Headlines:
- Instagram might soon introduce reels that can be up to 10 minutes long.
- The developers are currently testing out this feature.
- Instagram might make this update to rival long-form content on TikTok.
We all follow two simple steps to consume video content. If we want to see short-form content, we check out reels and shorts on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. However, to see long-form content, we check out only TikTok, X, and YouTube – leaving Instagram behind.
And it seems Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t like this. He wants to have a piece of the pie as well.
Therefore, Instagram developers are currently testing out 10-minute-long reels on the platform. This is done as a direct retaliation against the same being available on TikTok and X (and YouTube by default).

As you can see from this tweet from Meta developer Alessandro Paluzzi, you can now post reels that are up to 10 minutes long.
But how will this gel with the current content algorithm of shorter reels? Will we get a different section on Instagram, or will they be viewable alongside the shorter existing reels? This is not yet revealed and remains to be seen since it can have a big impact on the content marketing campaigns of marketers and influencers.
Instagram will be the last one to introduce this, since TikTok introduced longer TikToks in 2022, followed by X (previously Twitter) as well one the same year.
In addition, it remains to be seen whether users can monetize 10-minute reels on Instagram and how also see how it can be integrated with Threads, Meta’s answer to rival X.
