The U.S. Presidential Election is around the corner, with many other polls across the world. This is a crucial time for any social media platform to remain authentic about its content. Meta has taken upon the task of maintaining the authenticity of content on Threads sincerely. So, it has expanded its fact-checking program on Threads.
About Fact-checking on Threads, Meta says,
Early next year, our third-party fact-checking partners will be able to review and rate false content on Threads. Currently, when a fact-checker rates a piece of content as false on Facebook or Instagram, we extend that fact-check rating to near-identical content on Threads, but fact-checkers cannot rate Threads content on its own.
This is a welcome move from Meta, as many users are now leaving X and shifting to Threads as an alternative content platform. Zuckerberg has already confirmed that Threads has over 100 million users. Also, many journalists who earlier used X as the source of trending and most relevant content are now building ecosystems on Threads. So, the onus is higher on Threads to be just about its content.
In addition, there has been a boost in the popularity of this platform among sports enthusiasts. The highlight moment for the sports communities on Threads was “NBA engagement through Threads.”
So, with more users and communities taking to Threads, the chances of dissemination of fake or divisive news are becoming higher. The fast-checking program will ensure that the platform only carries authentic content, and the program will further identify the same duplicate content across other Meta platforms.
Most importantly, with the fact-checking program, Threads now has better control over the presence and exposure to sensitive content in the application.
Meta says,
We recently gave Instagram and Facebook users more controls, allowing them to decide how much sensitive or, if they’re in the U.S., how much fact-checked content they see on each app. Consistent with that approach, we’re also bringing these controls to Threads to give people in the U.S. the ability to choose whether they want to increase, lower or maintain the default level of demotions on fact-checked content in their Feed. If they choose to see less sensitive content on Instagram, that setting will also be applied on Threads.
Overall, it’s a great leap for Threads to become the best alternative to Elon Musk’s X.
