The Amazing History Of Social Media: A Timeline

Social media is a part of all our lives and has been for quite a few years, but how and where did it begin? In this article, we take a look at how social media began and the early days. There are not many things that have changed the world, but social media is one of them and if you ever wondered how it all started, here is the amazing history of social media.

The Birth Of Social Media (1997)

The very first social media platform was called Six Degrees, which enabled users to create a profile page and post images and text. The site had more than one million users before it was acquired by another company for $125 million in the year 2000.

Am I Hot Or Not? (2000)

This platform invited users to post photos of themselves and invite users to rate them in terms of attractiveness. It is said that this platform influenced Facebook and YouTube and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, there are many Facebook services that can boost your business and with a leading digital marketing agency at the helm, you can reach the right people with your message.

Friendster (2002)

This platform was an instant success and the company did not expect so many users to register and their servers quickly became overwhelmed, and users started to look elsewhere.

Myspace (2003)

A major rival of Friendster, Myspace was a site for teenagers to connect with like-minded people. When Friendster collapsed, most of the users moved to Myspace. In 2005, the site reached its pinnacle with 25 million users, before it was acquired by NewsCorp. Click here for the pros and cons of social media for teenagers.

Facebook (2003)

A small group of Harvard students including Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook as a platform for university students to connect with each other. At the time, no one would have guessed that Facebook would become the giant it is today.

Twitter (2006)

Jack Dorsey was one of the creators of Twitter and this global platform grew from day one. Tweets were limited to 140 characters at that time and the platform quickly grew and in 2022, Elon Musk paid an astonishing $44 billion for the company.

LinkedIn (2006)

LinkedIn was the first platform to offer users paid subscription packages and millions of professionals created accounts to keep up with potential positions that become available. Many professionals have found better jobs thanks to LinkedIn and there are many powerful features available on this platform today.

YouTube (2005)

Created by a small group of Internet entrepreneurs as a video-sharing site, YouTube quickly became the number one online video-sharing platform. One year later, the company was acquired by Google, and today, millions of people run their own YouTube channels.

If you run a small business, social media marketing has a lot to offer and for the best results, hire a leading digital marketing agency and let them manage your campaigns.
